The John Fielding books are generally very good in the historical mystery genre. Bruce Alexander(pen name) does some impressive writing in the language of the time (1770's). Story lines are well crafted and most of the underlining history seems accurate. In this book, however, Alexander seems to be showing an anti-American bias as if modern day Brits were still fighting what we called the Revolutionary War. His depiction of Ben Franklin is quite different than anything else I've read about him. Yes, we know that Franklin was naughty with the ladies even in old age, but Alexander depicts him as weak, frightened and of somewhat poor character. He also disparages people in the American colonies generally by saying something to the effect ' we have been sending just our trash over there'. One of the characters is a "slave catcher" from Georgia and he is depicted as completely evil. He no doubt was, but I got the feeling that Alexander was putting this guy forth as a average representative of all "Americans". To me the bias (wherever it may have come from and however widespread it may be today) was his motivation for writing this book. He was making a case for the Americans being treasonous and not having any right whatsoever to revolt.

I READ BOOKS EVERY SINGLE DAY
AND WHEN I FOUND BRUCE ALEXANDER;S
SIR JOHN FIELDING MYSTERY I READ IT
AND PROMPTLY WENT IN SEARCH OF HIS
BOOK LIST AND BOUGHT EVERY SINGLE
BOOK. READ ONE A DAY - COULDN'T PUT THEM DOWN!
Absolutely the best series I've read!
Good read if you enjoy a young man's perspective. Well written in common English language.
Having read all of Bruce Alexander's books, my regret is that his death brought about an end to this series about the Sir John Fielding and the Bow Street Runners. This purchase was to replace my original copy, which was lost in a move. In re-reading the entire series after many years, I was happy to find myself once again engrossed in "An Experiment in Treason" - an excellent read.
