The First Alpha A Biblical Shifter Romance Wolves of the Five Tribes Book 1 edition by KA Taylor Aya Fukunishi Paranormal Romance eBooks

The premise sounded interesting and the first few pages were incredibly well written and drew me in. The rest was predictable and felt rushed. The story was incredibly short and I lost my enthusiasm about halfway through it, although I did finish it.

I thought the heroin was weak, gullible, indecisive, uninteresting and I could not believe that 1) she could not scent her own father (she's a wolf...hello! and that was never explained) and 2) she did not even consider the possibility that the girl who followed her everywhere wasn't a plant by someone to keep tabs on her.

Furthermore, I guess I expected the alpha's history and age to come into play. It was only discussed as an afterthought. He was thousands of years old! That is what made him so interesting, but like I said, this was treated as an afterthought and he ended up chained to a concrete barrier and having to be rescued by his lover. Such a frustrating situation for such an interesting...and old...wolf!

The story had amazing potential and I was just so disappointed when it fizzled out. I truly hate leaving bad reviews, but there really isn't anything I can say to recommend this series. I will say that the best parts of the story were when Adam reminisced about his past and when the author talked about his loneliness.

The First Alpha A Biblical Shifter Romance Wolves of the Five Tribes Book 1 edition by KA Taylor Aya Fukunishi Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews

The First Alpha follows Cassie – a werewolf betrothed to a sadistic alpha for the sake of uniting her pack and his, ensuring their survival. Cassie spends most of her time trying to avoid her new alpha, Lucius, by running in her wolf form with her friend, Megan. On one of these runs, she discovers a bloody and injured wolf, who she brings into the alpha’s house, damning the consequences.

Cassie discovers Adam is a lone wolf—something which is completely unheard of in the age of clans—and also 3000 years old. He’s been roaming the world, looking for his fated mate, chasing after the dream. Cassie finds herself drawn to this male, but fights this attraction as her betrothed would slaughter Adam as soon as he finds him in his house, or even in Cassie’s thoughts.

There are some great characters for a short story. I loved Rutherford. He’s delightfully senile with the uncanny ability to lose his pants, but is happily subdued with a hot cup of tea. As the story continues, we learn that Cassie’s mother is actually a lot more cunning than first thought. She seems to have her claws in a lot of different people, manipulating them so she can get her own way.

This is a great twist on the werewolf theme, and I enjoyed reading it. My only question mark with this book is the fact that Cassie had to give a DNA sample to the police once upon a time in connection to a possible murder. There was also DNA beneath the fingernails of the dead man. I don’t want to give way too much, but why didn’t the police figure out that Cassie’s DNA and the DNA of the killer had similarities i.e. they weren’t human? Also, why would a werewolf willingly give a DNA sample?

Overall, a good, quick read from an author who usually writes erotica.
Adam (of Christian Bible fame) a werewolf looking for his fated mate, and Cassie, a werewolf in an abusive arranged engagement, meet and try to sort out their feelings and a rather problematic political and emotional situation.

There's lots of Christian Mythology incorporated into this book as well as passages from the Christian Bible. If that puts you off, do not get this book. If you're okay ignoring it, and it's not a big deal to you then... read more reviews before you purchase it.

For my part, I just want to say that there is no reason for Adam to have such a huge backstory. Nothing comes out of it in the end. It doesn't in any way come into play in his story arc. Maybe in the next book it might, but in this one, he's basically a dud. A bullet that never fired from Chekhov's gun. I can't say any more than that without going into spoiler territory. My advice is just keep your expectation low, as far as Adam is concerned, and you'll be fine.

All that being said, having the werewolf mythology tied to Christian writing makes for an interesting angle. It definitely opens up a few new doors in as far as the werewolf myth is concerned. Even if you're not into the religion itself you wonder what kind of effect these parallels would have in the world, particularly if the connection gets revealed to the general public or conservative hard line religious people. Which doesn't actually happen in this book but... maybe in the sequel?

3 stars. Has a few problems, but generally an interesting start... Adam's still a dud though.
First off, the premise behind this shifter world is so different and interesting compared to what I've read before. I don't want to spoil any of that, or how the history and lore works, but the beginning gives you a really great idea of some of the differences, so definitely check out the sample if you're curious.

I really enjoyed that aspect of it. The relationships and the characters were wonderful, but I think they were even better because of the immensely enjoyable world building that went on along with it. Sometimes authors do one or the other better, you know? But with The First Alpha, I thought both were really great.

Adam and Cassie's story is really entertaining, too. The concept of a fated mate is pretty known, but I felt like this was a bit different, too, because of some of the reasons I mentioned above. There's a little more struggle and it seems like there's more at risk, you know? I don't know how to explain it better than that, but I enjoyed the ideas and the characters more because of that.

I've read a lot of shifter romances lately, and after reading this one, I'm definitely going to look for more from this author, too. I was just really surprised at how neat this story was.

If you love shifter romances, definitely check this one out! It's got all of the things that you'd expect, but then a lot of surprises that make the story so much better, too. I really enjoyed it!
