Welcome to Alternate Britain, the year is 2012 and Victoria is STILL on the throne, God save the people. Queen V, happens to be a Vampire and her monarchy is made up of vampires, Weres, Goblin, Halvies and humans. The humans out number the paranormal elements, but like the world of Victorian England the peerage rule the world despite not being in the majority. The Y Pesties, the plague caused genes to mutate and give long life and advantage to those of Royal/Noble blood. To combat them being outnumbered by humans they bred with humans carrying the gene to produce a breed called Halvies to pretty much be their faithful servants and protectors, since they can't trust humans. The world building is good, and the characters are fun to read. The heroine is strong and kickass. The plot is fraught with danger. The sexy times all take place off page, so this is a pretty tame book in the explicit sex nature.
I personally loved the story and despite it coming up as a steampunk recommendation, which it's not. This was a solid paranormal fantasy. It had plenty of intrigue and thrills to keep me riveted to the end.

God Save the Queen Kate Locke 9780316196123 Books Reviews
I have to say I may have found a new addiction and her name is Xandy. This book was such a fun and at times laugh out loud funny read. I connected with the character of Xandy quickly as I loved her spunk and courage. She would go to any lengths for her family and friends and she was also a fierce fighter. The world the author created with all the different creatures in it was a little bit different from the norm and I loved how she explained how they all came about. It made for an interesting but fun take on the old normal. I was engrossed in this book from the beginning and found myself hooked very quickly.
As the story continues while Xandy is on her quest to find her sister we meet Vex who I fell in love with also. He was everything I expect from an alpha male and then some. He was so protective of Xandy and such a true gentleman that you can't help but to fall under his spell. I found myself loving any scenes that involved him and I was swooning right along with Xandy as the book continued. This book had plenty of action also and all the little inventions that they had were really cool too. I was interested in how this was all going to play out and I have to say there will definitely be some fall out from the end of this book. I can't wait to see how it will all come together.
Overall this was a really enjoyable and fun read. I am interested in seeing what happens next and reading the rest of this series. I in fact jumped right into book 2 so as you are reading this I am learning more about this series. I would really recommend this one to lovers of a good fun read that has a wide array of creatures from vamps, weres and even some goblins. I was highly entertained by this book and I think others will love it too.
Although this series is marked as steampunk, "God Save the Queen" reads more along the lines of a mash up between steampunk and urban fantasy.
Xandra, the protagonist, is a halvie, a half-vampire with noble blood on her paternal side. She lives in a world where Queen Victoria of England still lives and prospers as a vamp; where the date is 2012 yet the cars and dress are still old fashioned; where werewolves and vampires make up the aristocracy, plagued with mutated blood thanks to the Black Death; where goblins creep through the sewers of London, snatching children and dragging them back into the dark depths.
Xandra's world is turned upside down when her youngest sister, Dede, disappears and Xandra fights tooth and nail to get her back, risking everything and shoving past her own fears. Little does she realize, her problems are a lot more complex, more dark than just one missing sibling. Her search leads her to much more than she'd bargained, questioning Xandra's fierce loyalty to her Queen and those that have raised her. Conspiracies. Traitors. Science Experiments. Deception. Nothing is as it seems.
I loved this book. Admittedly, not enough to give it five stars (Though that may be because I never had time to sit and have long reads, just having to keep snatching little bits. Always takes away from the read.), but certainly enough to continue the series.
What really drives this story is Xandra. She's fiercely loyal, with an inherent sense of honor and familial bonds. Everything she knows is doubted, and yet she stays strong, keeps fighting, doesn't cave. She makes sacrifices, is forced to come to terms with terrors of her past, and she comes out better for it. Oh, and she has a nice dosage of spunk. Always good to keep things lively. D I really liked her and am looking forward to seeing how she progresses in the future.
I think my favorite aspect was the goblins. Not very popular in most UF books, that only made them all the more interesting. And they were really funny in a creepy, we-want-to-eat-you way. But it worked, and I somehow thought they were cute. But in a vicious way. They were just amusing and I got that feeling that Locke had a great time creating and writing them.
If you're looking for a steampunk with a heavy dosage of ground-shattering tech, this isn't it. This is Victorian London with relatively normal technology, paranormal aristocrats, and an intriguing conspiracy.
The goblins really make this story interesting to me, I'm a sucker for anything that references Christina Rossetti. (We must not look on goblin men, we must not buy their fruits, etc... ) The story is fast paced and entertaining. It differs enough from the Parasol Protectorate series to warrant reading even though the two authors tackle similar subjects and time periods. In this case the time period is artificially imposed but the dress and mannerisms are much the same. Anyone reading for a Steampunk gizmo type story might be disappointed, it's much more a genetic breeding, fighting, romance.. My only point of contention is that I hate the gratuitous fighting between Alexandra and Ophelia. Ophelia does nothing to warrant the animosity. It kind of put me off caring about Alexandra.
